I have reached the opinion that NaPoWriMo is not necessarily supposed to inspire great writing.
For me, at least, I think it's about the challenge and the way it grows you as a writer.
I've found things I tend to do when writing. It forces you to write without inspiration, and so to seek inspiration actively.
It does make you feel redundant, this is true.
And it's kind of freaking hard.
Are you enjoying my attempts thus far, dear reader, at national poetry month? Comment in the belowbar.
I definitely agree with you, about NaPoWriMo just being to improve you as a writer. And yes, I am enjoying your poems. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't do NaPoWriMo because it's not worth it to me to write poetry without inspiration. I write poetry because I have words bursting out of me that won't work any other way, so poetry is more of a release for me than a hobby. Just a personal thing.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, I can see similar themes in your poetry so far--we'll see how long that lasts.
Loving your poems. They're absolutely gorgeous and so powerful.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am enjoying your attempts. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I think that's very important as a writer--seeking inspiration vs. waiting for it to come around.
Q-- I agree with you, and I think my best poetry does come when it's flowing freely. That's why I write it so sporadically.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I also agree with you Erin, and I think it's really important as a writer to write even when you don't feel like it. It grows you and expands how comfortable you are with writing. When I did NaNoWriMo I grew as a writer so much. But I don't know if I can put myself through that again ;)
And thanks Priya and Maya :)
For me, the point is overcoming the perfectionism that stops me from setting pencil to paper at all. Shifting my emphasis from creating something good to just CREATING. Because that's what first drafting needs to be about!
ReplyDeleteI agree with that too, Cuil :)
